[good sound book, top corners bumped, light dust-soiling to top of text block; jacket moderately rubbed (including a long white streak down the middle of the spine), with various small closed tears, shallow chipping at spine ends, small chip at upper left corner of front panel, minor paper loss at upper right corner of front panel, small puncture-tear in rear panel]. Novel about the internal conflicts within a string quartet formed in America by refugees from Czechoslovakia. The group's principal violinist and leader, "who had been famous in Europe [but] was an unknown, an nonentity in America," finds himself consumed by jealousy as the second violinist in the group outshines him -- a situation not helped by his pesonal loathing for the man's "spectacular looks, his good humor, his attraction for women." (Oh, yeah, and he also happens to be hopeless in love with the guy's wife.)
