Octavo; hardcover; 319pp., with a monochrome frontispiece and 16 plates similar. Some softening to the spine head; previous owners' ink inscriptions to the front endpapers; text block mildly toned and bumped with some spotting, and dusted along the top edge. Price-clipped dustwrapper is rubbed and worn, torn at the bottom of the front panel and heavily chipped at the spine head and around to the rear panel; now backed by archival-quality white paper and professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Good. The Covenanters came largely to a sticky end at the end of the English Civil War and during the reign of Charles II in the Restoration; however, as Jane Lane argues in this prescient text, the aims of the Covenanters were not solely focussed on the maintenance of the Church and the eradication of Papist idolatry. She argues that the League of Covenanters effectively held the entirety of Britain to ransom by their demands and the threat that they implicitly imposed. Until the Wars of the Three Kingdoms broke their bloody hold, the Covenanters were a de facto British government. Opinion is divided as the honourable intentions and desires of the Covenanters and this biting narrative will not serve to put that division to rest.
