Undated. Preface reads: " "The Dingy House at Kensington" was published under that name in a magazine early in 1872. It then consisted of the first part of the following story and of some passages in the second and third parts. The rest appears now for the first time.". The brown covers illustrated with sun-flowers and with gilt lettering are darkened, there is a pasted bookseller's label (W J Miller & Co) on the front, corners and spine-ends are lightly worn, edges are lightly rubbed. The front end-paper is missing. The gathers are stapled rather than sewn and are glued together on a back strip inside the spine cover. The backstrip is split and three gathers (pages 129-144, 145-160 and 161-176) are detached. The staples are rusted but holding. Tissue-protected black and white frontis, title-page is lightly foxed, pages are clean. Decorated chapter capitals. Gilt blocks. Dated by reference to British Library catalogue.
