New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1886. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was not always recognized as a literary master. He called this Wessex novel a "romance" but harsh critics preferred "shocking" and "repulsive," reacting to a theme of illigitimacy. The Bend Sinister, always an important subject in England! First published in 1882; this is a scarce early reprinting, in a rather spectacular decorative cloth binding, featuring a griffin rampant on the front cover. Decorations stamped in black on the spine; titled in gilt. Clean text; 284 pages. Neatly-penned contemporary signature on the FFEP. Pages are toned and stiff, reflecting a 19th-Century publisher habit of issuing poor-quality paper within an attractive binding. Rubbed at the margins, but not badly; the spine ends have an older bit of repair. Cloth is a bit mottled. One of the most elusive of Hardy novels; a prize for the completist collector. In an archival plastic protector. Later Printing. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall.
