Dublin: The Talbot Press, 1932. The Official Handbook of the Irish Free State, a publication of the Irish government. The Free State was established by the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, replacing the Republic as proclaimed during the Easter Uprising of 1916. It gave Ireland status as a Dominion, which lasted until the establishment of modern Eire in 1937.) The anonymous editor was Bulmer Hobson, an important figure in Irish Republican history. This is a very handsome book, with brightly illustrated Celtic design. Profusely illustrated by many prominent Irish artists; over thirty chapters on all aspects of the history, culture, government, geology, art, literature, etc of the country. Absolutely clean textblock; 324 Pages plus 150 pages of adverts in the rear. Light toning to the endpapers. A rear pocket contains the beautiful Ordinance Survey map of Ireland, which is often absent. The beautiful front cover is bright and unmarked;. Some light chipping on the bottom edges and rubbing to the tips. There is llight fade to the head and foot of the spine. This is a delightful book to read or just admire as rather wonderful "government work." In an archival plastic protector. First Edition. Printed Wrapper.
