There are therefore a number of mountain passes on important trade routes. Nowadays both railway and motorway run through tunnels below the Karavanke, connecting Villach (Slovenian: Beljak) and Jesenice. Karawanken offers a good opportunity for mountaineering with numerous mountain huts."
