xii, 331 pages; Contemporary marbled sheep, flat spine decorated in gilt, black label, swirl-marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Binding somewhat rubbed and cracking along the front hinge. This is a very good copy of the FIRST EDITION. This work was reprinted later in the same year, under a different title: "Observations sur la trois siecles de la Litterature francoise, a M. S *** [l'abbe Sabatier]. " This has the same imprint, but is in 12mo. The text is the same according to Barbier III: 621 & 637. De Manne attributes this book to G. -M. Butel-Dumont, but De Backer does not agree. Abb Jacques Lenoir-Duparc, a Jesuit scholar, wrote this bitter critique of a work by Abb Antoine Sabatier de Castres entitled Trois siecles de la litterature francoise. He accuses Sabatier of partiality, affectation and an excess of moral zeal in rendering his judgments upon the works of certain French authors, such as Diderot, Voltaire and others.; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
