NOTES: The frontispiece, "ritratto di Dante giudicato da una commissione governativa il piu Autentico," is an etching from the portrait in the Riccardi codex 1040, in support of the authenticity of which Negroni gives a lengthy argument. The verdict of the commission has not, however, been accepted by Dante scholars in general. The portrait dates probably from the second half of the fifteenth century.
